The great thing about self-absorbed people is not being around them.  They are “lovers of self” which Paul speaks about in 2 Ti 3:1-2.  The interesting thing is that they are normally “lovers of money” as well, which Paul couples together with them in verse 2.  When you listen to them you begin to discover their narcissistic heart.  Their mouth speaks one thing but their actions betray them for what and who they really are.

The disciple of Jesus is called to put aside their interests and greed and work for the good of others.  If we are going to love people, let us love in deed and action, not merely with words.  Words soon become hollow if not followed up with action.

We must break the deadly habit of our self-absorption by the power of the Spirit and work with Him to crucify the deeds of the flesh.

Philippians 2:21 (NASB95)  21 For they all seek after their own interests, not those of Christ Jesus.

The questions today for all of us is, “Am I seeking after Christ’s interests or my own?  Whose goals am I working toward today?  Are they mine or the Lord’s?”  It’s a fairly simple, straight-forward diagnostic test for identifying symptoms of self-absorption.
